Penguin Research and a FREEBIE

Hello Friends!

I know you all are wondering what's going on.  I know, I know.  Two posts in two days...unheard of!  However, since my post yesterday was all about our fun fall projects (and was already S*U*P*E*R long) I decided to keep this next bit until today.

In my district we use Reading Streets for our literacy instruction.  One of the stories that we read is Penguin Chick.  I absolutely love when we come to that book.  I just find penguins to be so interesting.  The grammar lesson for the story is on common and proper nouns.  Usually, my kiddos do a pretty good job with this skill.  This year, however, I found that they really needed some extra reinforcement with this skill...especially in remembering to capitalize the proper nouns.  So what do you get when you combine an educational need, some creativity, and some really cute clip art?  One of my favorite word work activities!

I just listed this on TpT and it is on sale through tomorrow for the AMAZING Cyber Monday and Tuesday sale.  Click on the picture to check it out in my store.

Here is one of my cutie patooties diligently sorting the nouns into the proper catagories.

And recording his answers.

I store all of the pieces in one quart size baggie.  Easy, peasy!

The best part is that it made a huge difference for my students.  The extra practice really helped a lot!

And now for the freebie!  During this mini penguin unit, we read lots of books about penguins including the Magic Tree House Research Guide Penguins and the Antarctic.  I found that I wanted my students to have a place to record all the wonderful things that they were learning, so I quickly created this penguin tree map.  They were so excited to share with me the facts that they were learning.  Please click on the picture to visit my TpT store to snag a copy of this for your classroom!

While you are there, take advantage of the awesome sale.  There are so many fabulous bloggers who are offering their products at a discount.  I'm off to load up my cart!!
